Governor Anusuiya Uikey on Monday graced the ‘organ donation solicitation programme’ called ‘Legacy of Renewed Hope’ held in Imphal and called upon all to cooperate in organ donation.

The programme was held at Shija Hospital & Research Institute (SHRI), in honour of the first deceased Organ Donor in North East India. It was the first kidney organ donation and transplantation from a brain-dead person which was carried out in Manipur on August 2, 2023 for the first time in the entire North-Eastern region.

Addressing the gathering, Uikey said that “life and death is in the hands of God but if we cooperate in organ donation, we can save many lives and it will be a great service to humanity. Organ donors leave a lasting legacy after their demise by helping others and their lives become meaningful.

"The memory of the deceased person of the family is visible in the body of another person, which gives an astonishing experience to the family members. It also gives an impression of a person's successful life, she asserted, according to a release issued by Governor’s Secretariat, Raj Bhavan.

The governor cited the example of Late Sarungbam Kennedy’s family who would understand well the self-satisfaction that comes from it. After his sudden death, his kidneys were donated and transplanted to two patients who had terminal kidney disease. Due to this courageous and virtuous action of his family members, two terminal kidney patients got their lives back, she added.

 The Governor hailed Mohan Foundation and Shija Hospital and Research Institute Private Limited for their indispensable services by successfully performing difficult surgeries like organ transplantation for saving lives, the release said.

She stated that organ transplant is not only a modern medical method but it was also done in ancient times. She also extended her gratitude to all the doctors and stakeholders for scripting such history in the field of medical science, as per the release.

The Raj Bhavan said the Governor lauded the District Administration of Imphal East and Imphal West and the Police department for successfully maintaining a green corridor which was created for uninterrupted transportation of organs from Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences to Shija Hospital where a distance of 7.5 km was covered in 12 minutes.

While appealing to all to contribute in such noble gestures, the Governor said that there is a need to inspire the spirit of organ donation by initiating such innovative efforts of organ donation to more people in our state and country. She continued that some learned people have donated even their bones while alive for the welfare and protection of human beings and society, whereas today we have to donate only in emergency situations.

During the programme, mother of late Sarungbam Kennedy, Sarungbam Amusana was felicitated by the Governor by presenting a shawl and certificate and all concerned stakeholders were also felicitated by the management of Shija Hospital, the Raj Bhavan said.

Dr Palin Khundrongbam, chairman and managing director, Shija Hospital, Dr Guliber Potsangbam, Consultant Nephrologist, Shija Hospital, Dr. Somorandro Paonam Consultant Urologist and Renal Transplant Surgeon, Shija Hospital, Smt Sarungbam Amusana, mother of late Sarungbam Kennedy Singh & family members, doctors and concerned stakeholders were also present.

Briefing the media on the prevailing situation in Manipur after the programme, the Governor highlighted the continuous effort of the State and Central governments for restoration of peace and normalcy in the state. She calls upon all to end violence and not to take law in their hands.
