Former Rajya Sabha MP BD Behring on Wednesday condemned the “unnecessary” service extension of retired government employees even after reaching 60-65 years of age, stopping the promotion of the respective employee in line.

The former MP said in a statement that it is the norm for a government employee to retire from their job after reaching 60-65 years of age and consequently make way for the next employee in line to succeed them via promotion.

However, in Manipur there have been many cases wherein the retired employee extends their service by six months and so forth which stops the subsequent employee from getting their due promotion, he mentioned. These may result in many senior employees retiring before getting their promotions, he continued.

He accused those who extend their service of being selfish and questioned if “there have been any changes in the order issued by the Manipur government earlier to forbid the re-appointment or re-engagement of retired employees.”

“If this practice is continued it makes me think there will come a time when the ruling government also seeks to extend their term by a few months or more as we have seen in the term extension of the Autonomous District Council (ADC) and the Municipality Council.

“Let us all remember the oath that we took while swearing in as administrators of the state to ‘do right to all manner of people in accordance with the Constitution and the law without fear or favour, affection or ill-will and abide by it in all our actions and avoid favouritism or biasedness in our decision making,” he added.
