With an objective to safeguard the indigenous people of Manipur against the influx population from illegal immigrants, a ‘One day consultative discussion on the implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur’ will be held on April 12 at the City Convention in Imphal.

The discussion will be organised by six student bodies of Manipur.

Representing the six student bodies, president of Students’ Union of Kangleipak (SUK), Ningthoujam Dhanakumar, said that for the safeguard of the indigenous people of Manipur, the students’ body has been demonstrating various forms of protest demanding the implementation of NRC in Manipur.

Over the last few years, the population of illegal immigrants has been increasing in the hill districts. To identify the illegal immigrants, the implementation of NRC is much needed in Manipur, he added.

He said the six student bodies along with ANSAM organised a sit-in-protest in coordination of different Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi last month after which a Memorandum was submitted to the Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Updating and implementation of NRC has become the only option to identify those illegal migrants (those infiltrators who are involved in mass deforestation in reserved and protected forest areas and illegal poppy farming) and secure a future for the indigenous people, he added.

He further said in order to save the future generations, people need to move forward with taking NRC as the main priority.

He appealed to all the people to participate in the discussion. All the CSOs, leaders of different sections of people, special invitees, VIPs, media partners, professors, learned persons and others may join this discussion.

Dhanakumar said during the discussion student bodies from hill districts will also be participating.
