COCOMI, YFPHR call on Manipur Governor

Representatives from COCOMI and United Naga Council (UNC) urged Manipur Governor Anusuiya Uikey that NRC should be implemented at the earliest so that scientific method of identification may be applied to detect illegal immigrants and ensure that no further infiltration occurs in the state henceforth.

Representatives from Coordinating Committee for Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), Manipur and United Naga Council (UNC), Manipur called on Governor Anusuiya Uikey at Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Tuesday. 

The delegation led by coordinator, COCOMI Thokchom Somorendro, and NG Lorho, president UNC and other members submitted a memorandum advocating for the expedited implementation of National Register of Citizens (NRC) basing 1951 as a base year in the state of Manipur, stated a release. 

It included the aims to curb the influx of illegal immigrants and address the resulting demographic imbalance, which poses serious uncertainties and political insecurities to the native population of the state, it stated.

The team urged her that NRC should be implemented at the earliest so that scientific method of identification may be applied to detect illegal immigrants and ensure that no further infiltration occurs in the state henceforth. Random village recognition without verification must be stopped, it said. They further mentioned that the abnormal increase of villages in specific districts should be examined and corrective measures must be taken up, it added. 

She assured the representatives that necessary steps will be taken to ensure the NRC be implemented in the state and it is just a matter of time. She further said the matter has been discussed with the President of India, Finance Minister and Union Home Minister, and the Center is aware about the situation in the state. She also assured the delegation that all necessary action will be taken up in the best interest of the people of Manipur, it added. 

Representatives of Youth's Forum for Protection of Human Rights (YFPHR) led by its secretary T Shadishkanta also called on her and submitted a memorandum demanding actionable steps for – resettlement of the displaced people of the violence with proper protection by the State in Jiribam, Moreh and Churachandpur. 

It sought to ensure full protection of paddy cultivation for the farmers in the paddy land which are at the buffer zones; ensure investigation for polluting the water sources and other issues related to the violence that broke out in May last year, stated a release.

She assured the representatives that necessary steps will be taken up to ensure the resettlement of displaced individuals currently in relief camps. She also assured to address the ongoing crisis in the State and ensure a comprehensive investigation into the concerns raised, it mentioned. 

Meanwhile, Governor Anusuiya Uikey met Pukhrambam Bilash Singh and congratulated him on his new appointment as Director of Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy (JNMDA) at Raj Bhavan in Imphal. During their meeting, she discussed numerous initiatives aimed at promoting and elevating the rich heritage of dance and culture in Manipur, it said. 

Pukhrambam Bilash Singh, a versatile and accomplished artiste, has received extensive training in various forms of dance from JNMDA, Imphal. Pukhrambam Bilash Singh has been honored with the Manipur State Kala Akademi Young Talent Award, it mentioned. 

She expressed her confidence in Bilash's ability to contribute significantly to the Academy and the cultural landscape of Manipur, it added.
