Minister Khashim Vashum on Monday said that Chief Minister Biren Singh is committed towards upgrading Pettigrew college to university. If this is materialised, it would bring manifold blessings for the community, he said.

The minister was speaking at his felicitation programme by the Raphei Wungnao at the Tangkhul Theological Association Hall, Hungpung in Ukhrul district.

Addressing the public, Minister Khashim Vashum expressed his immense joy for the warm reception and felicitation accorded by Raphei Wunganao, CSOs and well-wishers.

The call to serve the people is God's plan and will, and not of my own making. As a minister and representative of the people, the ambit of my responsibility is for the state as whole, and not just for the Chingai area alone.

Stressing on the importance of education in nation building, Minister Khashim said that Chief Minister Biren Singh is committed towards upgrading Pettigrew college to university. "If this is materialised, it would bring manifold blessings for the community."

To make this happen, facilities thus needed must be adequately arranged to ensure prompt approval from the concerned authorities, he stated.

On the ongoing Pettigrew college administrative block and main gate construction, he urged the CSOs to inspect the quality of the work. "Do what is needed to ensure quality. But don't complain once it is executed," the minister said.

Commenting on the importance of national highways, the Transport minister urged the village headman and headman association to ensure that no disturbances come in the way of constructing a quality lifeline.

"If there is any dispute, sort it out through proper channels because we have no say in the customary dispute. But make space for the lifeline to be completed because the capital approved for the routes wouldn't be there forever," the minister said.

When we have proper national highways, people of the area will benefit the most. We must therefore ensure hassle free routes for maximum utilisation of our resources, he said while specifically mentioning the road connecting Jessami subdivision in Manipur's Ukhrul district to Nagaland's capital Kohima.

Meanwhile, Tangkhul Naga Long president David K Shimray said electing people's representatives lies in the hands of God. "With the grace of God and the support of the people, Khashim Vashum was not only elected as MLA but was also inducted as cabinet minister from the Raphei area. With the exception of Tangkhul Mayar Ngala Long, the rest of the Tangkhul community civil society organisations heads are from Raphei area (Northern area). It is the will of almighty God. We therefore must lead the people in the right direction. We all must join hands together and strive towards building a vibrant community, Shimray said.

Also speaking at the programme, Ato Longphang chairman Dearson Chamroy said that in the last five years, among the elected MLAs, Khashim was the one who had given the maximum contribution to the CSOs. With the victory of MLA Khashim as minister, many people must be planning to do things of their choice. But in the absence of support and cooperation from the people, it would remain a mere wish, Chamroy stressed, and appealed to the minister to move forward boldly and fulfill the aspiration of the people.

The programme was attended by Somi Kasomwoshi, chairman Raphei Wungnao, headman of northern villages,
TNL president, David K Shimray, TNWL president SA Ramnganing, TSL president Thingreiphi Lungharwoshi, TNL vice president Tuisem Kamkara, Dearson Chamroy, chairman Ato Longphang, Shimri Raising, president Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong, Somipam Vashum, president Raphei Katamnao Long and pastors and well-wishers.
