The Coalition against Drugs and Alcohol (CADA) on Saturday demanded the authorities to launch a probe into the Itocha International Drug Cartel whose two members were arrested by Delhi Police on February 17.
A release issued by secretary information and publicity L Brojen Angomcha stated that the Special Cell, Delhi Police arrested two persons, namely Ranbir Singh alias Tinku, 43, son of Swaroop Singh and Loyangamba Itocha, 33, both from Laipham Khunou under Heingang Police Station in Imphal East with 50kg of Opium from Sarita Vihar, Delhi at 3.30 pm on February 17. The whole episode was a shameful incident for Manipur, CADA stated.
It stated that Special Cell, Southern Range, Delhi Police, deputy commissioner Alok Kumar had announced in a release that an organisation called ‘Itocha International Drug Cartel’ is functioning in Manipur. The state government should not take the matter lightly, it added
CADA recalled that the release issued by the deputy commissioner mentioned how the Itocha International Drug Cartel had been operating for more than the past five-six years by transporting drugs from Myanmar and Manipur to Delhi, Punjab, etc.
CADA demanded answers concerning the identities of the drug cartel members, their origins and the people backing them. The Manipur government, which is waging a war on drugs, must find out the facts behind the said cartel, it stated.
What came as a shock was that the two persons had traveled all the way to Delhi from Imphal on road by riding a car with its number registered in Assam, it mentioned. The law enforcement agencies of Manipur failed to detect them, it added.
People from Manipur getting arrested with drugs had happened earlier in Delhi, Kolkata, Madhya Pradesh, Guwahati and other states, it added.
