Based on a field survey report of COCOMI Farmer's Wing, the agriculture sector in Manipur lost Rs 2,11,40,50,635 in 2023 as paddy field cultivation was affected due to the present crisis.
According to the report, 9,720 hectares were affected (42,281 in sangam) in 2023 in five districts of the state.
Out of total affected areas, the government compensated only 21,982 affected areas in sangam while sanctioning Rs 38.6 crore.
The survey report was presented by Farmer's Wing co-convenor KB Alangbam during a one-day discussion on 'Monsoon cultivation in affected areas on present crisis' on Tuesday at the Manipur Press Club, Imphal.
"If monsoon fails again and no agricultural produce is produced, then it will cause food scarcity and might cause civil war", Alangbam said.
The discussion was organised by COCOMI Farmer's Wing with an aimed to adopt resolution to address the present needs of agriculture community.
During the discussion, they discussed the current challenges faced by farmers and a strategic plan to enhance coordination and resource provision.
Following the discussion, they resolved to form a farmer's coordination committee specifically for affected village areas. The committee will play a vital role in ensuring farmer's concern, requirement.
Farmer's coordination committee will collaborate with state level monitoring committee and district level monitoring committee to create a cohesive and comprehensive support system for farmers.
While addressing the immediate needs of farmers, COCOMI has called for provision of essential resources such as irrigation, machinery, seeds and fertilisers through the appropriate government department.
To ensure the resolutions are acted upon, a memorandum will be submitted to key government officials, including Governor, Chief minister, agriculture minister, security advisor and relevant departments.
In the discussion, farmers from different districts who were unable to cultivate due to the crisis shared their view points and experiences.
