Condemning the Manipur government for the not repairing the Tongjei Maril Road, the Rongmei Naga Youth Organisation (RNYO) and National Highway Surveillance Committee (NHSC) has called for a 48-hour bandh along the Bishnupur to Rengpang road from 6 pm Monday.
RNYO general secretary Repuilal Panmei told the media that they have been demanding repairing of Tongjei Maril and upgrading of the Bishnupur to Rengpang road.
In connection with the said demand, bandh was imposed from May 19 to May 23 this year and the concerned minister assured to fulfil their demand, he said. Following the assurance, the bandh was called off on May 21, Panmei added.
However, the state government failed to act till date, which is why they have resolved to impose bandh for 48 hours, Panmei further said.
The bandh, however, will not cover any essential service, he said, adding that the decision was taken after the inspection visit carried out on Saturday.
Panmei further said that after the Irang Bridge on Imphal-Jiribam route collapsed, Tongjei Maril route from Bishnupur to Rengpang has become the alternative route. Due to the commuting of heavy vehicles most of the time, the condition of the road has been worsening each day. The landslide debris has made the route more difficult to travel, he said.
The bandh is being imposed in the interest of the people of the state and the association expects that people of the state will extend their support and cooperation, he added.
Tongjei Maril Old Cachar Road Transport Union president Sakaoba Riamei said that the union will fully endorse the bandh called by RNYO and NHSC. It is high time the state government accomplish the demands of repairing Tongjei Maril Road and to upgrade it to national highway status, he said.
He said that the condition of the said road is in such a bad shape and is prone to accidents.
The state government should deal with the matter expeditiously before the occurrence of any untoward incident, he said.
The union will intensify the stir by calling indefinite strike if the state government failed to fulfil the said demand even after this 48-hour bandh, he added.
