20 more CAPF companies for Manipur

The Centre has decided to provide an additional 20 Companies of CAPFs comprising 15 companies of CRPF and five companies of BSF in order to maintain the escalating law and order situation in Manipur.

In the wake of fresh violence in Manipur particularly in Jiribam, Centre has decided to provide an additional 20 Companies of CAPFs comprising 15 companies of CRPF and five companies of BSF in order to maintain the escalating law and order situation in the state.

As per a fax message to Chief Secretary, Government of Manipur; Home Secretary, Government of Manipur and the Director General of Police, Manipur from the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India by Ritesh Kumar Singh, Second-In-Command (G), the decision is of with immediate effect and will remain upto November 30, 2024 for maintaining law and order in the state.

“In order to maintain the law & order situations in the State of Manipur, it has been decided to provide additional 20 Coys of CAPFs (CRPF-15 (Ex- Assam) & BSF-05 (Ex-Tripura)} to the Govt. of Manipur with immediate effect and upto 30.11.2024 for maintaining L&O in the State,” the message stated.

The message also requested the government of Manipur “to work out the detailed deployment plan, in consultation with the respective CAPFs.”

With the deployment of above 20 Coys of CAPFs, a total 218 Coys of CAPFs (CRPF-115 including 5 Coys from In-Situ, RAF-08, BSF-84 including six Coys from
In-Situ, ITBP-05 & SSB-06} shall be available with Government of Manipur upto 30.11.2024, the Ministry of Home Affairs stated.

According to reports, eight companies of CAPFs from Guwahati and Agartala arrived at the Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal on Wednesday afternoon.

This has come about following the escalation of tension in the state, especially in the recent past where 11 Kuki militants were reportedly gunned down in a gun battle with the personnel of D-20 CRPF at Jakuradhor Karong under Borobekra Police Station in Jiribam district around 3 pm on Monday while several sophisticated weapons including RPGs were seized.

As per reports, before the armed confrontation took place, the Kuki militants approached and torched around five shops in broad daylight at Jakuradhor Karong under Borobekra Police Station.

Moreover, in the wake of terror attacks in Jiribam district on Monday, Kuki terrorists killed two elderly Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who were staying in Borobekra relief camps. They also abducted six individuals including three minors, who remain missing.

However, five individuals have been rescued by police and central forces.

On Tuesday police said that the armed militants were found to be from distant Churachandpur and Pherzawl Districts, and had traversed a long distance to Jiribam District for planning/ executing these attacks.

The statement also stated that during the attack, one CRPF constable namely Sanjeev Kumar sustained bullet injury and was evacuated to Silchar Medical College, Assam and is under treatment. It added that reinforcement teams consisting of Assam Rifles, CRPF and Civil Police were deployed at the area.

Meanwhile, police and CRPF carried out a search operation in the Champanagar area under Jiribam PS early morning based on an input of the presence of armed elements. The operation was led by IGP (Zone III).

The search operation yielded arms and ammunition found concealed by unknown miscreants which included two 12 bore double barrel guns, one two-inch mortar, 36 live barrel cartridges and five empty barrel cartridges.
