Woman found hanging on last day of home quarantine

The 24-year-old woman had undergone treatment after she was tested positive for COVID-19 at JNIMS and was kept in home quarantine after being tested negative.

In a schocking incident, a 24-year-old woman was found hanging inside her room on the last day of home quarantine on Sunday. She had undergone treatment after she was tested positive for COVID-19 at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute Medical Science (JNIMS) and was kept in home quarantine after being tested negative.

The deceased, Naoroibam Sarju, daughter of N Santa, hailed from Pebiya Pandit Leikai, Imphal East which falls under the jurisdiction of Irilbung Police Station. She was found hanging at about 6 am, family sources said.

Speaking to the Imphal Free Press, a local named Bangkim Ningombam said the cause of death might be due to mental stress. Social stigma not only against the infected people but those who have recovered from COVID-19 can cause stress, he added.

He said the authority concerned, especially medical experts need to give awareness and consultation to those who are undergoing home quarantine and the locals of the respective locality to prevent social stigma.

It is reported that Naoroibam departed for Imphal from Delhi on May 23 and reached Imphal on May 28. Since then, she had been staying at a community quarantine centre located at Bashikhong community health centre.

One of the medical officials of the said community health centre said that her sample was tested on May 29 as she had fever and she was retested on June 1 after her results came positive. The official further said she was admitted at JNIMS hospital for treatment of COVID-19 on June 2. After receiving treatment, the doctor advised her to stay under home quarantine on June 14 as her test results came negative, officials added.

Speaking to the media, a family member reported that they did not come across any signs of mental disorder during her home quarantine period. “However, she shaved her head on Friday. When we asked why she shaved her head, she answered that it is a trend these days to shave one’s head. She also told us that she will be meeting her friends after her home quarantine,” the family member added.

After having dinner on Saturday night, the family members left her in her room. She was found hanging inside her room in the early morning, the family members informed.

She was pursuing post-graduation in Chandigarh and trying to appear for civil service examination.

Family member also reported that she was also infected with dengue when she was in Delhi.

A team of police along with a forensic team reached the spot and collected her body for autopsy at JNIMS. The team followed protocols and safety measures by wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
