Washima Death Case: MHRC acts on death of co-accused in Sajiwa Jail

Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has registered a suo moto case on the death of a co-accused at Sajiwa Jail in reference to Imphal Free Press report titled ‘Co-accused in Washima murder found hanging’.

MHRC has directed the DGP Manipur to submit a detailed report on the incident before the commission on or before February 24 for further proceeding. The DGP has been further directed to instruct IGP (prisons), Manipur to be present at Central Jail Sajiwa during chairperson’s visit for inquiry on February 14.

The Commission has notified that it has minutely read and examined the contents of the news item and is of the view that the incident is a serious violation of the right to the alleged co-accused namely Md Sahid, 25, son of Md Ethem of Yairipok Changamdabi Mathak Leikai.

The incident violates his right to personal security while in Central Jail Sajiwa, which is guaranteed by Article 21 of Indian Constitution of India read with relevant prison laws and CrPC provision, it said.
