Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel to raise mobile call, data charges from December 3

Major telecom service operators are set to raise call and data plan charges from Tuesday. While Vodafone Idea on Sunday announced to hike mobile call and data charges by 50 per cent from December 3, Bhartel Airtel also said that it would raise the said charges by 42 per cent come December 3.

Announcing its new plans – first mobile tariff hike in four years – Vodafone Idea said in a statement that call and data charges will be dearer for its prepaid customers by up to 50 per cent from December 3. Every outgoing call made by customers on to the network of other operators will also be charged 6 paise per minute.

“Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL), India’s leading telecom service provider, today announced new tariffs/plans for its prepaid products and services. New plans will be available across India starting 00:00 hours of 3 December 2019,” the company said in the statement.

It said its entry level unlimited plan with a year-long validity will be hiked by about 50 per cent to Rs 1,499 from with 24 GB of data instead of Rs 999 plan, which comes with 12 GB data usage limit.

Following the announcement by Vodafone India, Bharti Airtel too announced its revised tariff plans for its mobile customers, raising the mobile call and data charges under the unlimited category by 42 per cent.

“These tariffs will be applicable from Tuesday, December 3, 2019… Airtel’s new plans, represent tariff increases in the range of a mere 50 paise per day to Rs 2.85 per day and offer generous data and calling benefits,” the company said in a statement.

However, Airtel said that it will provide exclusive benefits as part of the Airtel Thanks platform, which allows access to premium content from Airtel Xstream — comprising 10,000 movies, exclusive shows, and 400 TV channels, Wynk Music, device protection, anti-virus protection among others.

As per the new Vodafone Idea plans, the price of plan with 365 days validity in the unlimited category with daily data usage limit of 1.5 GB per day will cost 41.2 per cent more at Rs 2,399 from December 3 as against 1,699 at present.

According to a company official, new plans will replace the existing plans in unlimited category from December 3 and other new plans will be announced based on market response.
