Two cops released on bail in Dr Haraba's assault case; RRM, IMA demand action

On June, Dr Haraba was allegedly assaulted and was kicked on his abdomen. As a result, he received injuries and the police personnel allegedly fled from the spot.

Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal West on Tuesday remanded two police personnel and later they were released on bail with Rs 80,000 PR bond each in connection with Dr Haraba’s assault case.

The police personnel are Vikram Khundongmayum, Sub-Inspector of Manipur Police Department and posted at Chandel District but now attached to NAB-PS (Narcotic and Affairs of Border)/Imphal-West and Khondram Bomcha (38), son of  K Irabot Singh of Sagolband Salam Leikai, who is also Sub-Inspector of NAB.

They were produced before the court by police with a prayer of fifteen-day judicial custody for a thorough investigation. However, the counsel of the alleged accused filed bail prayer as the police personnel were on service.

It may be mentioned that the complainant namely Ningthoukhongjam Tombi Raj (65), son of (L) N Khelchandra Singh of Uripok Ningthoukhongjam Leikai filed a complaint report to the OC-I/W stating that on June 7 at about 9:15 pm, while his son namely Dr Ningthoukhongjam Haraba (41) was returning home after discharging his duty at Community Quarantine Centre, Johnstone Higher Secondary Shool, his son's 1-20 Car and a Maruti WAGON R Car (Silver) bearing Regn. No. AS-01BG- 1493 almost collided along the Uripok Kangchup Road near Uripok Energy Petrol Pump.

After the incident, Dr Haraba was allegedly assaulted and was kicked on his abdomen. As a result, he received injuries and the police personnel allegedly fled from the spot.

Police are examining one witness who was present at the scene of the crime.

RRM, IMA condemn

Royal Riders Manipur (RRM) has strongly condemned the alleged assault on Dr Ningthoukhongjam Haraba, one of the frontline workers by two narcotic police personnel on Sunday night when he was returning home after his duty at Johnstone Higher Secondary quarantine centre.

During a press meet at Kangjabi ground, the president of RRM Momo Laishram stated Haraba is one of the active members of RRM and has been contributing for RRM for years. Momo urged the government to book the alleged culprits involved during the act.

Meanwhile, Indian Medical Association (IMA), Manipur Sate Branch has also strongly condemned the incident of assault on Dr N Haraba who was returning from COVID-19 duty on the night of June 7 by two security personnel at Uripok-Kangchup road near NRL energy station.

A release issued by state president and state secretary of IMA, Shyamkumar Laishram and Ng Arunkumar Singh mentioned that Haraba is a medical officer (Ayush) who is the in-charge of six quarantine centers in Imphal West. He is one of the frontliners in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic.

The association reiterated that the persons involved should be booked and given exemplary punishment under Epidemic Disease (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020 and the Manipur Medicare Service Personal and Medicare Service Institutions (Prevention of Violence and Damage to Property) Act, 2015. IMA state branch said that it stands in solidarity with All Manipur Ayush Doctors Association which is spearheading the protest against the assault.
