The Union Tourism Ministry has announced various measures to minimize the use of the single use plastic (SUP) and create awareness among stakeholders to make tourist places in the country plastic free, official sources said.

The ministry has decided to start awareness campaign on eradication of SUP among tourists and visitors at iconic places, a PIB release stated. It stated that the ministry plans to organise cleanliness drives such as collection of plastic waste and its proper disposal at various important tourist destinations and educational institutes with the help of local public, volunteers, students and faculty.

The ministry also advised all states/UTs to take steps so as to create awareness among the locals and tourists about eradication of SUP in tourist places and to organize special plastic shramdaan among others.

Apart from the effort to reduce use of single use plastics, the ministry has classified 31 Adventure Tourism Activities which are land-based, water-based and air-based under the revised Guideline ‘Indian Adventure Tourism Guidelines – 2018’ (Version 2.0), according to the release. The information was given by the Minister of State for Culture and Tourism, Prahlad Singh Patel in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Monday.
