Manipur Police foiled students’ attempt to hold protest, demanding the immediate release of arrested ATSUM leaders.
Manipur MLA Ram Muivah on Wednesday called for releasing of the student body leaders who are under police custody, to bring an amicable solution between the government and ATSUM.
ATSUM has decided to intensify its agitation from August 5.
The Haipi Pledge resolution was taken during the 2nd General Assembly of ATSUM for the tenure 2020-22 held on July 15.
The All Tribal Students' Union, Manipur (ATSUM) General Assembly was held at Haipi village in Kangpokpi district.
The ATSUM stated in a release on Thursday that the shutdown has been called to demand the introduction of Hill Areas Committee recommended ADC Bill 2021 in the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
The union also appealed to educational institutions in the state to relax the registration and admission scheduled for the scheduled tribe students in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
A joint statement issued by the three students union on Wednesday stated that they had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the government of Manipur in the presence of the chief minister and his cabinet colleagues on June 9, 2018 with the assurance that native officers will be given preference in the appointment of the chief secretary in the future.
