IFP Editorial: The poor villagers who toil in the poppy fields, it is just another day’s work. For them, it does not matter whether it is poppy or any other crop as long as they get the wages howsoever meagre it may be.
Despite the ban on poppy farming in Manipur, its cultivation is widespread. Interestingly many farmers who are dependent upon opium for earning their livelihood are not even aware of the fact that it is illegal. Their only concern is to earn enough for their well-being and their children’s education.
N Biren Singh also assured that the government would provide alternative livelihood to all those needy people who are part of the illegal drug business because of compelling life circumstances due to poverty.
IFP Editorial: As compared to elsewhere, Manipur’s War on Drugs is nowhere and it even does not deserve to be called a ‘war’.
The Manipur chief minister said that a total of 34 hill leaders have vowed that they will ban the cultivation of poppy plants in their respective village areas.
IFP Editorial: Instead of blaming the poor villagers the state’s focus should be on finding the facilitators of poppy farming on our side of the border, for they would be the actual beneficiaries.
