Meghalaya government says it is trying to speed up the process to start peace talks with the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council.
The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council leaders informally met the government interlocutor PS Dkhar soon after their arrival in Meghalaya.
“The peace talks have started, and the state government is committed to ensure that the talks are concluded at the earliest,” CM Sangma said.
“We are hopeful that the Indo-Hynńiewtrep peace process shall bring about political changes and benefits to empower our Jaidbynriew Hynniewtrep.”
The Meghalaya government will ensure the peace talks with the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) reach its logical conclusion, the state home minister said.
"The Central and state governments have agreed to grant a safe passage to the leaders of the HNLC, who are to be engaged in the talks for the peace process, where they can come and go and maybe stationed themselves within the territory of India.”
CM Conrad Sangma said that the state government has already shortlisted the names of people for appointment as an interlocutor.
The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) has decided to give peace a chance after receiving a lot of requests from elders and social organisations in the last few days.
The banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) also asked party workers to immediately resign from the NPP within a month’s time.
The chief minister said that the government is ready to facilitate peace dialogues with the outfit. However, the government does not want unconditional talks.
