Manipuri film ‘Ishanou’ (1990), directed by Aribam Syam Sharma was screened during the ARCUREA, a prestigious seven-day global event organised by the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) in Kolkata.
Aribam Syam Sharma’s masterpiece, “Ishanou” (1990), celebrated at the Cannes Film Festival 2023, is all set to grace the prestigious Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) ‘To Save and Project Festival’ in New York this month.

The turning point for Manipuri Cinema came in 1981 when Aribam Syam Sharma used a 16mm Bolex camera to film his sensational Imagi Ningthem (My Son, My Precious), a story about the unconditional love of a woman for the illicit child of her husband.
Time to implement historical events into Manipuri cinemas and revive the film industry of the state, bringing back the cine goers to cinema halls.
Though India is diversified with various languages, dialects, cultures and traditions, any films produced from any particular state should not be termed ‘regional’ films, Aribam Syam Sharma said.
Special feature of the festival includes ‘a rare retrospective of Aribam Syam Sharma, the master filmmaker of Manipur,’ followed by the celluloid screening, of some of his masterpieces.
