Disaster cannot be prevented but can be mitigated, said Dimapur Deputy Commissioner Anoop Kinchi during the Table-Top exercise conducted by the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) on Wednesday. The Table-Top exercise is a part of the Nagaland Emergency Preparedness Exercise (NEPEx) 2019.
The NSDMA under the Home Department organised the Table-Top exercise for NEPEx 2019 in all the districts in Nagaland. The NSDMA had directed all districts for conducting mock drill, simulating extreme weather conditions.
Kinchi, who is also Responsible Officer for NEPEx Dimapur district, maintained that “for mitigation, preparedness is the best option.” He called upon all the officials to take the exercise seriously to be in a better position to tackle when real disaster strikes.
Recalling the October 27 flood situation in the state, Kinchi asked all officials present to do a realistic drill on November 21, observing that with such mock drills, the district would be able to react to the situations more efficiently if such disaster occurs again.
ADC Dimapur, V Lovitoly Sema, also the Incident Commander for the mock exercise, said that NEPEx is conducted annually for testing the machineries and preparedness of the state in case of disasters. She also highlighted the activities to be conducted during the mock drill.
The ADC further informed that all resources have to be stationed in the staging area, Badminton stadium Dimapur, opposite DC’s office and requested all the people involved in the exercise to carry out their roles and responsibilities for successful conduct of the mock drill.
The public of Dimapur are informed not to panic or be alarmed as the siren for the process of the mock drill will be sounded at 9:45 am, she added.
