After spending two days in police custody and 23 days in judicial custody, secretary, state unit CPI, L Sotinkumar was freed on Tuesday. He was granted bail by the Judicial Magistrate First Class, Bishnupur on Monday.
Executives and volunteers of left parties along with its mass fronts welcomed the communist leader upon his release by hosting a reception function at Irawat Bhavan.
He was welcomed by party members who raised various slogans like “Comrade Sotin Zindabad” and by placing garlands on him.
A team of City police arrested L Sotinkumar on December 20, 2019, in the wake of the nationwide general strike called by left parties against the controversial amended Citizenship Act on December 19. He was released on bail on December 21 by chief judicial magistrate, Imphal West but was, however, re-arrested by Nambol police and was remanded to judicial custody.
Speaking on the occasion today, Sotinkumar asserted that the left parties will continue to fight and protest against the controversial Citizenship Act.
Saying that the sedition charge against him is very unfortunate, he maintained that the sedition charges should be framed against a political party like BJP, which was never a part of the freedom struggle or which never worked for the toiling masses.

Sotinkumar said the Left parties cannot bear the state’s repression meted out to the people who are against the fascist, communal, undemocratic and unconstitutional Act. The repression today is worse than the feudal era, he added.
He further said that full cooperation of the people was extended towards the general strike called by the Left parties on December 19 last against the CA clearly showing that they are against the controversial Act.
While recounting that various other leaders of the Left parties and their mass fronts among others were arrested in the wake of the anti-CA protests, Sotinkumar went on to assert that the BJP led government getting ready to arrest anyone who is against the Act, is very disgraceful.
He also contended that the state police committed various forms of atrocities on the people in the lock ups.
Secretary, state unit CPI-M, Ksh Shanta, and secretariat member, RSP, Kangjam Manoranjan among others were also present during the occasion.
