Proposed 48-hour bandh by student bodies suspended

The student bodies, however, warned of resuming intense forms of agitations from September 26 if the state government delayed the demands of the tribal students.

The All Tribal Students’ Union Manipur (ATSUM), the All Naga Students’ Association Manipur (ANSAM) and the Kuki Students’ Organisation (KSO) general headquarters have temporarily suspended their proposed 48-hour “inter-state bandh” which was scheduled to begin from September 14.

The three student bodies, however, warned of resuming intense forms of agitations from September 26 if the state government delayed the demands of the tribal students.

The student bodies and representatives of the state government Education Minister Radheshyam Singh and Forest and Environment Minister Awangbou Newmai had a meeting at SSA conference hall, Imphal on Friday and discussed the charter of demands at length for three hours, stated a release issued by ATSUM, Seiboi Haokip on Friday.

It stated that during the meeting it was noted that there are progress in some issues demanded by the student bodies. However, complete fulfilment of the charter of demands would require further discussion. As such, it was agreed upon that the department concerned would examine and process the issue immediately, it added.

It was also mutually agreed that the next round of meeting would be held by September 25 in the presence of the chief minister of the state, it added.
