Special Judge (POCSO), Senapati A Noutuneshwari Devi sentenced rape convict Ashin alias Kashin to life imprisonment with a fine of Rs 2 lakh under Section 326 IPC and 4 POCSO Act, 2012 for committing sexual assault and causing grievous physical injury to a girl on August 1, 2017.
Fifty-two-year-old Ashin alias Kashin, son of (L) Mangainangba of Nungtek Karvanmung village, Noney district was convicted on Wednesday by the same court after final hearing in the trial.
The court also recommended awarding the victim compensation under Section 357-A (2) CrPC and by invoking Section 33 (8) of protection of children from sexual offence, 2012 as per Manipur victim compensation scheme, 2019.
A sum of Rs 1 lakh for causing grievous physical injury and a sum of Rs 5 lakh for causing penetrative sexual assault (rape), in total Rs 6 lakh is to be given to the victim through her mother within 60 days from the date of receipt of the order.
During sentence hearing, the convict prayed for mercy and for his release from the jail. However, due to gravity of the crime the court was inclined to award a life imprisonment.
Notably, the convict had absconded for about 23 months after he was released on bail and arrested again on October 2, 2019. Since then the trial was going on in the court.
