The 23rd edition of Katho Katamnao Long general conference cum sports meet 2020 concluded on Tuesday at Ramva, Ukhrul.

The closing ceremony was attended by MLA Ukhrul Alfred Kanngam Arthur and ADC member, SP Mashunngam as chief guest and guest of honour respectively.

Alfred Kanngam Arthur in his speech stated that the name ‘Tangkhul’ was given by the Britishers. “Today, we have accepted it and adopted it as our name. We proudly identify ourselves as Tangkhul everywhere whether in the east or west, north or south, and the blood of the Tangkhul runs in our veins,” he said.

Arthur continued “Today, we are seeing Katho, so different from its original constituents. We gave so much importance to the nomenclature having totally forgotten how united our ancestors were.”

The number of Katho members has reduced as if everyone wants to form their organisation according to their whims, he said, adding this is against God’s will as well as against the community.

‘Tangkhul’ is enough. Our elders can look into it, keep historical records, its significance and importance. Beyond that, it is a waste of time, he added.

“Our youth, what is most important thing you must know about the land that you are living in, where is your strength? Where is your destiny? Your strength lies in knowing who you are. You are living in a democracy and it is high time you understand the word democracy,” he said.

Further the MLA said if there are one thousand people watching a dance, there should be ten thousand people listening when your leader is speaking. A civilized people are like that because you know where you stand and you know that your foundation is democratic and that is your vote. Our youths, do not ever forget this, he added.

SP Mashunngam in his speech stated that the times have changed. He appealed to the gathering that one must also learn to adapt with the fast changing world. He stated God has bestowed one with clear minds for reasoning, so one must stop celebrating by indulging in intoxicants and instead concentrate and contribute in making a vibrant Katho Katamnao Long in the days to come, he added.
