An observation to mark the incident in which three youths were shot dead during the annual Thabal Chongba celebrations on March 24, 2008 at Heirok was held on Tuesday at the RPN Umang Laikol premises, organised by the RPN Memorial Trust Committee.
As the state is under a lockdown over the coronavirus threat, only a few selected family members took part in the offering of fruits and flowers at the function today. From the side of the 300 special police officers (SPO), three of their commandants took part in the solemn function with the offerings being made keeping three metres distance between those present in accordance with the coronavirus guidelines.
It may be recalled that the shooting incident had taken place during the 2008 Holi festivities when the youths were taking part in the traditional group dancing at one of the localities at Heirok. Unidentified men had fired on the congregation causing the death of the three youths Romesh, Promila and Nirmala, all from Heirok. Another girl from Kairembikhok had been blinded permanently in one eye by the incident.
It was only after this incident that the Special Police Officer force, which is made of 300 security personnel, had been set up and the SPOs are still in use in the Heirok localities today.
Also, from that year onward, March 24 has been observed as the ‘Mangal Piba Numit’ (Day of enlightenment) by the people of Heirok.
