Nirbhaya Case: Convict Mukesh Singh writes to President, seeks mercy; hearing tomorrow

Mukesh Singh, one of the two convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case, whose curative plea was dismissed by the Supreme Court earlier in the day has moved a mercy petition to President Ramnath Kovind.

A division bench headed by Justice Manmohan will hear the matter on Wednesday.

Mukesh Singh, along with three other convicts in the case, is to be hanged on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail.

A five-judge bench headed by Justice NV Ramana dismissed the curative pleas filed by two of the four convicts of the 2012 Nirbhaya gang-rape and murder case Vinay Kumar Sharma and Mukesh Singh this afternoon.

Two other convicts, Akshay Kumar Singh and Pawan Gupta had not filed curative petitions.

Nirbhaya (fearless), the 23-year-old paramedic student from Ballia in Uttar Pradesh, was gangraped for hours and brutally assaulted with an iron rod on intervening night of December 16-17, 2012 inside a moving bus in south Delhi by six persons before being thrown out the road. Efforts were made to save her life. She was flown to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for treatment, but she died on December 29, 2012.
