A fish species with the scientific name Schistura Syngkai has been found in Meghalaya’s West Khasi Hills district, officials said on Saturday.
A team of scientists led by Prof Khlur Mukhim of Shillong’s Lady Keane College discovered the Schistura syngkai at Twahdidoh stream, a tributary of Wahblei river, they said.
Mukhim said that specimens of the fish have been sent to the Zoological Survey of India in Kolkata and the Gauhati University Museum of Fishes.
Schistura syngkai have golden-brown bodies with blackish lateral stripes. There is no difference of sexes in their appearance, the scientists said.
The finding of Schistura Syngkai adds to the rich biodiversity of the state.
