“MU authorities and teachers who are not checking the examination papers must be held responsible if teacher trainees do not get their scholarship amounts. The students will lose their careers due to negligence of teachers who are not evaluating the answer papers in time.”

Secretary education and academy affairs, Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Longjam Robin made the statement in a press conference held at its head office located at Kwakeithel on Friday.

Speaking to the media, Robin said the authorities of Manipur University have failed to release the examination results of B.Ed 2nd semester which was conducted last year during the month of September. As the results are not declared, the teacher trainees of D.Ed and B.Ed could not become eligible to apply for Tata Trust Scholarship, he said. To avail the scholarships, a trainee has to submit the examination mark sheets of the recent examination, he added.

He said as per merit records of a trainee, a sum of Rs. 11,000-23,000 can be received as a scholarship amount. During the investigation by DESAM, there are more than 300 teacher trainees who are eligible for the said scholarship, he stated. But due to the negligence of teachers while evaluating the answer sheets, the results of the students could not be declared by MU authority and a total sum of about Rs. 45 lakh could not be received by the trainees, said Robin.

He informed that concerning the matter, DESAM has inquired the controller of examination, MU. The controller told DESAM that eligible government and private teachers including department of teachers education have declined to check the examination papers in time. The MU authorities also have extended the last date of submission for the scholarship but due to delay in declaring the examination results, the trainees failed to receive the scholarship, said Robin.

DESAM will consider those teachers, who are not checking the examination papers in time, as not possessing the quality to be teachers, he claimed. The student body urge the controller of examination, MU to give the names of those teachers who have denied checking the examination papers, he added.
