A selfie of a rape accused Vikash Gupta, who is the elected Ward Commissioner of Shillong Cantonment Board, courted controversy prompting questions on how an accused was allowed cellphone inside a lock-up.
Gupta was arrested on November 9 on charges of allegedly raping an 18-year-old girl.
The accused allegedly raped the victim on November 6, according to reports. However, the matter came to light after the mother of the 18-year-old reported to the police that her daughter attempted suicide by consuming phenyl, according to The Shillong Times.
In the picture which went viral on social media, Gupta was seen clicking a selfie inside a lock-up.
Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Claudia A Lyngwa, told The Northeast Today that the image was not taken inside the lock-up stating that the background shown in the selfie was only the outer portion. The lock-up was deep inside, the police added.
