The North American Manipur Association (NAMA) on Sunday submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the US, urging his immediate and personal intervention in resolving the Manipur crisis, stating that the same is now more urgent than ever.
Earlier on Friday, leading Meitei civil society organizations (CSOs) based in Delhi, namely the Delhi Manipuri Society (DeMAS), Meitei Heritage Society and Ningols United Progressive Initiative (NUPI) also wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging to ensure protection of Meitei civilians and to take actions against armed Kuki terrorists.
The memorandum signed by NAMA president Thoihen Heisnam, drew the attention of the PM towards the ongoing crisis in the state. It expressed concern that the situation remains critical with hundreds of people killed, over 60,000 people displaced for more than 16 months and violent clashes continuing to tear apart the social fabric of the state.
It pointed out the sufferings and immense hardships endured by the people of Manipur and said that a visit from him will aid in achieving lasting peace and restoring hope to the affected communities.
It highlighted several key points requiring immediate attention including Preservation of Territorial Integrity of Manipur and National Security; restoring Peace and Stability; rehabilitation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs); appeal for Stable and Reliable Access to Internet and other essential services; a comprehensive and transparent Peace Process; investigation into Foreign Infiltration, Drugs, and Terrorism; safeguarding Freedom of Expression and Promoting Healthy Dialogue and a visit by the Prime Minister as a Symbol of Commitment to Peace.
Asserting that the situation in Manipur is growing more urgent by the day, it reiterated its appeal to the PM for his personal intervention to secure the future of Manipur and ensuring the security of the entire nation.
NAMA also wished Prime Minister Narendra Modi a successful visit in the US for the QUAD Leader’s Summit and also successful engagements with US President Joe Biden to strengthen US-India bilateral relations, it mentioned.
Meanwhile, (DeMAS), Meitei Heritage Society and Ningols United Progressive Initiative (NUPI) on Friday wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging to ensure protection of Meitei civilians and to take actions against armed Kuki militants.
The letter jointly signed by the three CSOs expressed concern over the escalating violence being perpetrated by armed Kuki terrorists against Meitei civilians, which now threatens India’s national security.
It highlighted the chain of incidents that occured in the state following the outbreak of the violence that erupted on May 3, 2023. It claimed that the ongoing crisis saw a relative return to normalcy and thanked the Centre and State Governments for their intervention.
It mentioned the nationwide rally conducted by Kuki Zo Tribal CSOs on August 31 demanding a separate Union Territory with a Legislative Assembly. Subsequently, from September 1 onwards, armed Kuki terrorists launched unprecedented coordinated attacks on Meitei civilians, resulting in four deaths and injuring over a dozen, it noted.
It further pointed out that KSO President Poajakhup Guite had admitted on national media of developing missiles and targeting Meitei civilians and further threatening to launch more attacks. It went on to say that a Kuki terrorist has claimed responsibility for the missile attack in Moirang that killed a priest namely Rajkumar Pabei on September 7.
It sought urgent intervention and action and urged to investigate the involvement of KSO, its officials and armed Kuki militants behind the attacks on Meitei civilians using drone bombs and missile attacks.
It also demanded abrogation of SoO with Kuki terror outfits; to declare organisations involved in the attacks as Terrorist organizations and to launch a concerted crackdown on armed Kuki terrorists and neutralize their nexus with foreign anti-India forces behind the ongoing crisis in Manipur.
It implored the Prime Minister for his personal intervention to prevent further violence, to safeguard the lives and properties of innocent civilians and uphold the territorial integrity of Manipur and protect national security.
