Manipur Tourism on Thursday announced that the 5th Manipur Statehood Day Women’s Polo Tournament will be played at Mapal Kangjeibung Polo Ground in Imphal, from January, 17-21, 2020. Six women’s polo teams will compete in a field league tournament organised by Manipur Tourism along with the All Manipur Polo.
This year’s edition of the tournament features teams from the USA, Great Britain, Argentina, Egypt, Indian Polo Association, and Manipur. Participation in the tournament has been made possible by prestigious national and international polo bodies including the United States Polo Association, Hurlingham Polo Association, Asociacion Argentina de Polo, the Egyptian Polo Federation, Indian Polo Association, and the tournament organiser All Manipur Polo Association.
The tournament was announced to the media at Hotel Imphal, Sangai hall by the tourism department director, Ibohal.
Principal secretary of tourism, PK Singh said, “We are very proud to be the presenting sponsor of the only international women’s polo tournament in India in the birthplace of modern polo.”
The tournament also marked the sesquicentennial of polo in England. Major Mark Cann of the UK Armed Forces Polo Association, with Prince Harry, the Prince of Wales as its Patron, he said, He also mentioned that it had been officially stated that the 5th Manipur Statehood Day Women’s Polo Tournament would be the closing event of the UKAFPA’s world-wide commemoration of the advent of Polo in England from India in 1869.
England and world are forever indebted to Manipur for giving them the glorious game of modern polo, he added.
The tournament sponsors include incredible India of the Ministry of Tourism, New Delhi, which continues to support the international travel of the international teams since 2018. Team jerseys are designed by the U.S. Polo Assn. as part of its Global Women’s Initiative.
