Session Judge, Imphal West, RK Memcha has sentenced 26-year-old Meisnam Suresh to rigorous imprisonment of 10 years and a fine of Rs 15,000 for sexually assaulting a 21-year-old girl in 2014.
Meisnam Suresh, 26, son of M Loken of Ghari Awang Leikai, Imphal was convicted on January 7, 2019 by the same court.
The court recommended that the convict on failing to pay fine would undergo another two months of simple imprisonment. The amount of fine may be deposited at any time before the lapse of sentence of 10 years. The period of detention undergone by the convict during the period of investigation and trial shall be set off against the sentence of imprisonment.
From the said total fine, 80 per cent of the amount shall be given to the Prosecutrix as compensation and the remaining amount shall be paid to the state. The court also recommended the victim for compensation under Manipur victim compensation scheme.
Mention may be made that in view of the convict’s family condition, the court recommended the district legal service authority (DLSA), Imphal West to provide further legal aid and access to beneficial scheme to the family members of the convict so that they can lead a normal life.
Notably, Suresh was arrested on August 8, 2014 following a complaint lodged by the victim’s father. As per the complaint, Suresh committed the crime on October 14, 2014 at around 1.15 pm while the victim was sleeping in her room taking advantage of the absence of her family members.
When the victim tried to call for help, Suresh gagged the victim using a pillow rendering her helpless.
