In an innovative initiative in the age of high technology, Kakching Book Fair 2020 is being held with various competitions and prizes, including ‘Listen and Write’, to encourage reading and writing among the younger generation.
The book fair was inaugurated on Thursday at the auditorium of Library and Information Center, Kakching. Kakching Municipal Council chairman Naorem Sanjitkumar and former chief librarian of both RIMS and JNIMS, N Giridhari attended the inaugural function as chief guest and president respectively.
The eight-day book fair with the theme “Reading: My Passion” will continue till January 9.
Speaking on the occasion, Sanjitkumar implored students to dedicate at least an hour of study at the library for a day, while N Giridhari expounded on the benefits of libraries for the people and its importance to the culture and development of the society.
A well-read society is by virtue an advanced one, Giridhari said, adding an appeal to Library and Information Center, Kakching to observe its 25th jubilee celebrations. “I will sponsor the prizes for the event,” he assured.
Library and Information Centre secretary Kshetrimayum Joykumar stated that book fair is being organised for the benefit of students. As a part of the event, various competitions such as drawing and painting events and a ‘’Tasi amasung Eesi (Listen and Write)’ competition will be conducted along with prize distribution ceremonies, he added.
As a part of the inaugural event, a creative painting by Lalit Kala academy awardee, Nongmaithem Nandaraj of Kakching Turel Wangma was handed over to be displayed at the gallery of the library and information center. Books were also made available with a discount of 10 per cent for book lovers and students.
