JAC demands resurvey of Trans-Asian Highway project

The people of Lilong welcomed the highway widening project but say the survey for land acquisition was done in ‘private interest.’

The JAC against the Misconduct Survey of Trans-Asia Highway 102 from Lilong Thong to Waithou has appealed to the government to conduct a resurvey before acquiring the standing property for the Trans-Asia Highway widening project.

JAC convenor Kh Liyakat Ali, addressing the media at Lilong Ushoipokpi Tharaorok, Thoubal on Sunday, said the people of Lilong welcomed the highway widening project but the survey for land acquisition was done in ‘private interest.’

Asserting that the only irrigation canal for the paddy land beside the highway was covered in the survey for land acquisition, Liyakat questioned, “How will the farmers plant their crops when there is no source of water?”

Pointing out that the compensation rate is also different for different land owners, the convenor said, “Those who have good connection with the authority concerned get high rate compensation and those who have no connection get low rate compensation”.

On behalf of the entire victimised land owner, Liyakat appealed to the authority concerned to look into the matter and deliver justice to the victims.

The JAC also warned of resorting to different forms of agitation if the government fails to take up the resurvey and omit the canal in the acquisition process.
