Five year-old minor 'sexually assaulted' in Ukhrul

The accused has admitted to committing the crime, police said.

In a shocking incident, a five year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 25 year-old man on October 4 at Ukhrul Town.

The accused has been identified as Sanjay Das, son of Haratan Das from Dulia village, Pathar Gandi district, Silchar, Assam. He has been residing in Ukhrul since 1998.

A complaint filed by the parents of the minor on October 5, addressed to officer in-charge of Women Police Station, Ukhrul, has stated that “on October 4 at around 6:30 pm, the accused has committed sexual assault on the five year-old minor girl inside the room of the accused who was staying in a rented house.”

According to the complaint, the incident was reported to the parents the next morning by their 10 year old elder daughter who witnessed the incident. Out of fear, she did not tell her parents immediately as she was threatened with dire consequences by the accused. The matter came to light only when the victim complained of uneasiness in the throat in the early morning of October 5.

The parents have lodged the FIR for initiating legal action against the accused. Accordingly, the Ukhrul police on October 5 arrested Sanjay Das from his residence at around 7 pm. The accused has admitted to commit the crime.

As informed by SP of Ukhrul, Worngam Ningshen, the accused was produced before CJM Ukhrul on Tuesday for police remand till October 12. The victim was taken to RIMS for a medical check-up and forensic test on Tuesday and the results would be available in the next few days, he added.

The SP continued that there could be more sexual offences which are not reported to the police or authority concerned.
“Whenever people come to the police seeking help with confidence, we will take whatever positive steps to help the victims find justice,” said Ningshen.

As part of the formalities, the accused Sanjay Das was taken for medical test at COVID-19 Test Centre at Bakshi Ground, Ukhrul and he will be produced before CJM Ukhrul on October 12 for judicial custody.
