Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced that the entire country will go under total lockdown period for three weeks starting Tuesday midnight.
Addressing the nation for the second time on COVID-19, Modi said the total shutdown will be in place for 21 days.
“To save India, to save every citizen, yourself, your family… there will be a total lockdown across the country for 21 days from Midnight tonight,” Modi said.
The prime minister warned that if the 21-days lockdown is not followed then the country, your families will go backwards by 21 years. The lockdown is applicable for everyone, the prime minister said, adding that the lockdown will be like a curfew.
The prime minister appealed to the countrymen to stay at home to prevent the spread of COVID-19 or COVID-19. “Forget about stepping out from home for the next 21 days. Stay wherever you are. Stay at home,” PM Modi said.
“Social distancing is the only solution to prevent the spread of COVID-19,” PM Modi said making a fervent appeal to the people not to cross the ‘lakshman rekha’ of their homes in the next 21 days.
Nearly an hour after his address to the nation, PM Modi took to Twitter to ensure the countrymen that there is no need to panic.
“Essential commodities, medicines etc. would be available. Centre and various state governments will work in close coordination to ensure this. Together, we will fight COVID-19 and create a healthier India,” PM Modi Tweeted.
In another tweet, PM Modi warned the consequences of panic buying.
“By converging around shops, you are risking the spread of COVID-19. No panic buying please. Please stay indoors. I repeat- Centre and State Governments will ensure all essentials are available,” he tweeted.
