Sharing solidarity with China concerning the outbreak of COVID-19, folk musician and singer, Guru Rewben Mashangva along with other singers of the state have released a song titled, ‘Empty Streets of Wuhan’.
Composed by Ngachonmi Chamroy and sung by Rewben Mashangva along with other artistes including Rani Sharma, Somaya Rumthai and K Hoinkimnei Kom, the song was officially released by the wife of titular king Leishemba Sanajaoba, Anamika Leima at the conference hall of Tribal Research Institute (TRI) on Tuesday.
The solidarity to China is expressed in the lyrics, “On the empty streets of Wuhan, fear and despair roam, wearing the face of Coronavirus today. Heartache and pain you have been through before, your extent culture to endure and overcome will see you through again. We are with you ancient world, china be strong, be strong Wuhan….we are praying for you.”
Briefing the media on the sidelines of the function, Ngachonmi Chamroy said that people of China have become victims of xenophobia and discriminated. They are being blamed for the outbreak of COVID-19 due their food habits and the chemicals they produce, he said.
Similar discriminations have been faced by people of northeast in other mainland India and the people of the region are aware of such discriminations, she observed. As such, the song is composed to encourage and support the people of China, said Nagchonmi.
The song was composed for a performance in Lui Ngai Ni this year, he further said adding that the performance was already released on the internet and people of China have also liked the song. Such songs can only come from a person who cares about others, it is about love, understanding, empathy and compassion, said Ngachonmi.
Documentary film maker of Manipur, Oinam Doren who was also a part of the function said, “I feel emotional with the simple and powerful lyrics. I have always believed Guru Rewben in whatever he do, but with this song, I have reaffirmed by faith to the singer again “.
He also claimed that this song has been a first initiative taken up by artiste community around the world in connection with COVID-19.
Another documentary filmmaker, Meena Longjam said, “When our world is reeling under such a harsh situation, it is very humbling that a person like Guru Rewben Mashangva has come up with such songs”. The outbreak should be stopped and it should not spread further, she added.
