Battle against Coronavirus gets tougher as death toll crosses 1,500; 1,716 medics infected

As many as 1,716 health workers have been infected by the coronavirus and six of them succumbed to it, according to reports. In view of the alarming situation, new safety rules for health workers have been issued by the Chinese National Health Commission.

“Epidemic control work is at a critical stage, and protecting and caring for medical staff plays a significant role in winning the battle against the virus,” Zeng Yixin, deputy head of the National Health Commission, was quoted as saying at a news conference organised by the State Council Information Office on February 14.

Over 67,000 confirmed cases have been infected by the virus and the death toll has risen to 1,526 worldwide, mainly from mainland China, according to reports.

According to a report in China Daily, Zeng also said, “Medical staff will undergo health checkups, and infected workers will be immediately isolated, in order to reduce cross infections among medical workers, or between medical staff and patients, to the greatest extent”.

While scientists struggle to find a vaccine, the coronavirus attack that was first detected on December 31, 2019 in Wuhan, China, continues to spread. New confirmed cases are being reported daily while scientists are working to find a vaccine for it.

China on February 14 reported 2,641 new cases of coronavirus, taking the total number of cases to 66,492. The death toll rose to 1,523, according to the statement by the National Health Commission.

On February 13, the Hong Kong government announced 11 confirmed cases from aboard the Diamond Princess Cruise liner, all Hong Kong residents. The cruise ship, docked at the Yakohama Bay in Japan since February 3, has been quarantined.

Japan, on February 12, reported eight new coronavirus cases, taking the number of confirmed cases in that country to 258. Of them, 219 are from the Diamond Princess Cruise ship where 3,700 people are on board. The virus has claimed one patient in Japan, according to reports.

Meanwhile, the United States has decided to evacuate Americans from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, the site of the biggest coronavirus outbreak outside China, stated a report in BBC News.

The head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the new coronavirus, which is still spreading, could be around for at least another year, according to a report in the CBS News.
