Hitting the gym without a proper instructor and gaining muscles in a short duration by using anabolic steroids have become a trend among the youngsters. However, they are unaware about its side effects, said physical instructor of RIMS, Ak Rabi.

Speaking to Imphal Free Press, Rabi asserted that misuse of anabolic steroids for muscle gaining can exert various health effects such as cardiac arrest, aggressive behaviour, erectile dysfunction, enlarged prostate and others.

Anabolic steroids are meant to be used only for medical purpose such as treatment for hormone problems in men, muscle loss from some diseases and others, however the body builders are misusing it to gain muscles in a short period, said Rabi.

Though anabolic steroids is included in the prohibited list of the World Anti-Doping Code (International Standard), many bodybuilders and athletes are taking a new synthetic forms of anabolic steroids called designer steroids which is difficult to detect, he added.

Stating that the doses of anabolic steroids used by bodybuilders are 10 to 100 times higher than the doses used to treat medical conditions, Rabi said, adding using them this way is not legal and safe.

Sharing the same view, general secretary of All Manipur Body Builders Association, Y Sunanta said the main reason for the uses of steroid by youngsters is that they want to have a perfect body like film actors in a short duration.

The parents of the youngsters are also blindly supporting them, thinking that hitting the gym will make their children stay away from drugs and other psychotropic substances, added Sunanta who begged the Mr India Junior and Mr Manipur (champion of champions) titles in 2014.

Now a days some trainers also illegally prescribe steroids to the trainee as per the latter’s wish for making a muscular body in a short duration, continued the general secretary.

“As per my knowledge six body builders in the state have died due to cardiac arrest, which occurs from consuming steroid”, added Sunanta.

“Youngsters should know that we can build a perfect muscular body without taking anabolic steroids. Our own Mister Maipak who won the Mister India title without taking steroids is one exemplary figure,” he pointed out.

There is a need for mass awareness on the side effects of using anabolic steroids, Sunanta asserted. The current trend of consuming steroids to pump up muscle is a lethal practice which should be avoided by all means, he added.
