Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal was on Sunday elected as the president of the Assam Olympic Association. Sonowal was former Union Sports Minister before he became Assam’s 14th chief minister following his victory in the May 2016 elections.
“Honoured to be elected as the president of Assam Olympic Association (AOA). I thank members of the AOA for putting their trust in me to lead Assam’s apex sporting body and congratulate all newly elected office bearers,” Sonowal said in a series of tweet on being elected as president, Assam Olympic Association.
The chief expressed hope of Assam becoming the hub of sports in India.
“Working together with the spirit of #TeamAssam, I am certain that we will make Assam the hub of sports in India,” Sonowal said in another tweet.
Lakhya Konwar was elected as general secretary of the Assam Olympic Association while Tapan Kumar Das became the new treasurer and Amal Narayan Patowary, Sanjib Handique, Shantanu and Tarang Gogoi were made joint secretaries.
The association also got 10 vice presidents.
