The Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) strongly condemned the killing of former Zeliangrong Baudi (AMN) president Athuan Abonmai and demanded immediate punishment against the police personnel who were on duty on the day he was allegedly abducted near Apollo Ground, Tamenglong district HQ.

“The district magistrate and superintendent of police of the district must be sacked within 24 hours,” demanded MPCC.

MPCC also demanded to conduct judicial enquiry by not less than a sitting high court judge within 24 hours, followed by genuine explanation from the DGP of Manipur the reason for not being able to prevent the abduction of Athuan Abonmai in broad daylight from the government event in full public glare.

Addressing media persons in a press conference held at Congress Bhawan, BT Road on Thursday, MPCC working president K Meghachandra said that assassination of Athuan Abonmai after abducting from a programme venue, where Chief Minister N Biren, cabinet ministers, MLAs and high ranking official were present, is a serious matter. The incident proves that the law and order situation of the place is still not stable.

"The present government always claimed that law and order has been improved but the incident of such killing that too after abduction from security alert area, had never happened before. We the Congress party would like to ask how this kind of incident occurred if the law and order situation in hill areas is better," said Meghachandra.

Supplementing the press conference, MPCC working president I Hemochandra said that assassination of Athuan Abonmai, who always stands tall for unity and integrity of the state, is unfortunate. The incident clearly shows the ground reality of the present government of not being able to provide a secured life to the public despite the claim of law and order stability in the state.

"The abduction of Abonmai at gunpoint from a programme attended by the chief minister and killed after some hours is a matter of serious concern. Though the chief minister always claimed that relation between hill and valley has improved with the advent of the present government, the brutal killing incident reflected that there is disunity even among hill people. The government should take the sole responsibility as it is the result of complete failure in administration of the government,” said Hemochandra.

Congress party will always stand for justice to Athuan Abonmai and will fight for the unity and integrity of Manipur that Abonmai had always cherished, he added.
