The Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) on Tuesday stated that the recent letter written by the governor of Nagaland RN Ravi to the state chief minister Neiphiu Rio has portrayed the torchbearers of the Naga movement in bad light.

In a release, the NSF argued that Naga movement for self-determination is a mass based assertion for the Naga people's legitimate rights to be respected by any forces that stand to oppose it. This century old people's movement culminated in the government of India officially recognising the unique history and situation of the Nagas.

The ensuing political dialogue at the Prime Minister of India's level to find a permanent solution to the vexed issue began 23 years ago and have thus far seen three interlocutors prior to RN Ravi's appointment, said the NSF.

The federation said that much progress has been made on all fronts and now Nagas are waiting for an agreement acceptable to the Naga people to be inked. However, there is absolutely no denying the fact that the adversaries of the legitimate people's movement have been trying to derail everything that has been achieved thus far through prolonged political negotiations. “It is a matter of great pride that the Naga people continue to stand their ground and weathered every storm that comes our way with patience and dignity. That said, the recent letter of RN Ravi, Hon'ble Governor of Nagaland and GOI appointed Interlocutor to the Indo-Naga Peace Process to the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Nagaland which portrays the torchbearers of the Naga movement in bad light reveals the arrogant attitude and insincere approach of the GOI and their unwillingness to settle the issue” said NSF.

The federation said that the letter also reeks of an attempt by the appointed symbolic head of the state to overthrow and overpower a democratically elected government. The student body said that it will not remain “blind and mute” to attempts by individuals to belittle and disregard our “internationally recognized movement”.

Condemning the “disrespectful attitude of RN Ravi towards our Naga freedom fighters”, NSF said the usage of the words like 'gangsters', 'extortionists' etc. by the interlocutor only seeks to undo whatever has been achieved through the “blood, sweat and tears of his predecessors”. “The Federation shall not shy away from openly stating that RN Ravi himself has been responsible for the many hiccups in the peace-process in his attempts to earn some personal brownie points”, said the NSF.
