The office of the Working Committee Naga National Political Groups (WC NNPGs) has expressed vehement condemnations against the “cold blooded killing” of an alleged extortionist in Kohima on June 23 by a police anti-extortionist team.

Irrespective of whether the deceased victim was unassociated or belonged to any Naga political group, gunning down an unarmed man is an act of cowardice, said a release issued by the media cell, Working Committee, NNPGs.

As trained men, the police were expected to display tactical acumen, awareness and arrest or subdue the suspect, it said.

“It is clear that these trigger happy buffoons, mostly backdoor appointees with fake high school certificates, are not fit to be assigned in the streets,” the release said, adding harassing and terrorizing the public will be counterproductive.

They endanger the lives of citizens more than anyone else, it said.

It further said, there are eyewitnesses who watched in horror the act of murder in Kohima town. To shoot a man in the head and later justify by saying that the gun went off accidentally in a scuffle is frivolous, it added.

Nagaland is small and who pulled the trigger will also be known, it stated adding the WC will not remain a mute spectators in the future.

While stating that a group called Anti extortion group is on the prowl, it questioned “under what moral authority can the police force adopt to stop national workers from seeking and soliciting humble contributions from shops and commercial centres, particularly those which come to Nagaland and making huge profits?”

The police force is reminded that the Naga national workers inherited a political legacy and responsibility which precedes the Indian Independence, it stated. “From the inception of our struggle, nominal contribution to the cause has been mandatory. The question of extortion does not arise,” it said.

The Naga National political groups (WC, NNPGs) would like to appeal to the Naga people that considering the current status of political negotiations between the government of India and the WC, it is important to distinguish between extortionist and genuine national workers, it added.
