Hospital incinerator functioning well: JNIMS

All the daily wastes generated from COVID Wards like PPE, caps, face cover, shoe cover, gloves, N95 face mask, etc. are treated with sodium hypochlorite solution.

Concerning the allegations that biomedical wastes are being burned at an open area of JNIMS hospital, the hospital authorities on Sunday clarified that the incinerator plant of the hospital is functioning well.

In JNIMS Hospital, there are 150 dedicated COVID beds with bed occupancy of 140 to 150 per day, said a statement.

All the daily wastes generated from COVID Wards like PPE, caps, face cover, shoe cover, gloves, N95 face mask, etc. are treated with sodium hypochlorite solution and then collected in double layer polythene bags and then burnt in the incinerator plant, it said.

The incinerator plant of JNIMS has the capacity of burning 100 kg wastes/hr and recently, it has been upgraded to maintain a temperature of 1200 degree Celsius in the secondary chamber as per BMW Management Rules 2016, the release stated.

Some part of general wastes from COVID wards like food packages, leftover food, materials etc. are treated with sodium hypochlorite (1-2 percent) solution and burnt and the ashes are buried underground, JNIMS said.

Besides, two ETP (Effluent Treatment Plant) with capacity of 50 KLD and 10 KLD have already been processed for construction after getting approval from JNIMS Authority, the release said. At present, all liquid BMW are treated with sodium hypochlorite (1-2 percent) solution and disposed of, the release added.
