After protest, fertilisers distributed to farmers of Kumbi in Manipur

As many as 1,695 bags of fertilisers were handed over on Monday to recognised farmers.

Agriculture Minister Oinam Lukhoi Singh on Monday distributed urea fertilisers to the farmers of Kumbi assembly constituency, Bishnupur district at Kumbi Ibudhou Sandong under the aegis of district agriculture officer in Bishnupur district.

Under the supervision of district agriculture officer and district administration, Bishnupur district, altogether, 1,695 bags of fertilisers were handed over on Monday to recognised farmers and ensured to hand over more bags of fertilisers in the coming days.

Speaking at the occasion, Minister Oinam Lukhoi expressed that the government fully acknowledged the concerns and grievances of farmers and their demands to receive the fertilisers during this Kharif season. So, the Agriculture department always strives to meet the requirements of our farmers in the state, he said.

Lukhoi also informed that the department has relevant documents for those farmers who have already received the fertilisers and for farmers who are yet to get urea. He assured that the department is striving towards providing fertilisers to all the farmers as necessary arrangements are being made to procure reserved fertilisers.

He earnestly appealed to the farmers and all stakeholders to inform the department if anyone is found selling fertiliser on black market. He reiterated that befitted actions will be taken up against such violators. He also announced that 8,000 bags of fertilisers will be provided for 2nd phase at the earliest.

Director of Agriculture department Kh Lalmani, Bishnupur district DC Krishna Kumar, SP Hopson Sapam, district agricultural officer and top officials of Agriculture department accompanied the minister.

On August 7, many farmers of Kumbi protested and seven farmers resolved to carry out a hunger strike until they received the urea fertilizers. The protest was jointly conducted by Kumbi Apunba Laumi Sinmi Lup, Bharatiya Kishan Sanga and Kumbi Urban Development with a rally in various parts of Kumbi Setupur.

Addressing the media at the sidelines of the protest, Kumbi Urban Development president, N Akash Meitei said that they urged the state government to make the urea available to them by August 3, however, the government failed to materialise till date. This prompted many farmers to carry out the protest.
