Attack on Cops: Six sent to judicial custody, 22 released on bail in Imphal East

A total of 28 persons from Khurai Heikrumakhong, Imphal East were arrested for allegedly attacking police personnel on July 30.

In connection with a case of attacking police personnel by pelting stones on them on July 30, the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Imphal East on Thursday remanded four males and two females in judicial custody till August 19 while 22 accused persons were released on bail.

A total of 28 persons from Khurai Heikrumakhong, Imphal East were arrested for allegedly attacking police personnel on July 30. Among them, four males, namely R Thomas Velung; Ajij Khan; MV Akbar; L Ejimuddin and two females namely Manira and Rekson were sent to judicial custody. The remaining 22 persons were released on bail on furnishing a PR Bond of Rs 50,000 each. 

The court stated that those who are released on bail should attend in accordance with the bond executed by them, and they should not commit an offence similar to the one they are accused of. It was stated that they should not directly or indirectly make any inducement, threat or promise to any persons acquainted with the facts of the case so as to dissuade him from disclosing such facts to the court or to the police officer or tamper with evidence.

Before the court, it was submitted that on July 30, upon receiving information that a large number of people were coming out of their houses at Khurai Heikrumakhong area in violation of the curfew, a police team led by executive magistrate Dhananjay arrived at the place.

It was submitted that Dhananjay tried to disperse the crowd but the unruly mob pelted stones at the police personnel which damaged the police vehicles as well as caused injuries to some of the police personnel. 

Additional public prosecutor submitted that during the course of investigation, it was established that on the day of the incident, the executive magistrate along with the police personnel were performing their duty to enforce the curfew when the accused persons attacked them by pelting stones. The police vehicle was damaged as a result and some police personnel also sustained minor injuries.

On the day of the incident, the police were also making inquiries to arrest one Abba Khan, who was involved in FIR 48(07)2021 HNG/ Police Station which also pertained to an incident of pelting stones at the police while they were performing duties.

It was submitted that such instances of stone pelting and rioting against the police personnel are becoming a common occurrence in the area. The additional public prosecutor further submitted that prima facie case has been made out against nine accused namely R Thomas Velung, Ajij Khan, MV Akbar, L Ejimuddin, Ruhima, Rekson, Sahista, Manira and Thoibi.  It was submitted that these accused persons have been established to have played the main role in commission of the offence. A prayer for remanding all the accused persons in judicial custody, especially nine accused persons was also submitted.

The counsels of the accused persons prayed to release them on bail though the court sent six accused persons in judicial custody by considering the nature of offence and initial stage of investigation.

The names of those who have been released on bail are Md Manawar Khan, 38 son of Md Iboton of Khomidok Heikru Makhong; Md Tamijur, 28, son of Md Shahid Ahmed of Khomidok Heikru Makhong;  Md Sahidur Rahaman, 36, son of Md Salim of Khomidok Heikru Makhong;

Md Maniruddin, 58, son of (L) Md Meino of Khomidok Sorok Mapal; Md Ajmir, 27, son of Md Ejimuddin of Khomidok Masjid Maning;  Md Anish, 24, son of Md Ejimuddin of Khomidok Masjid Maning; Md Mujibur, 45, son of  (L) Md Latif of Khomidok Sorok Mapal; Md Jiauddin , 47, son of (L) Md Abdul Majid of Khomidok Epum Mapal;

Md Ethem , 37, son of (L) Md Nurjaman of Heikru Makhong Masjid Maning;  Md Sanayai, 48, son of (L) Md Achou of Heingang Khong; Md Irshad , 21, son of Md Ethem of Khomidok Umang Leikai; Md Nausal Ali , 21, son of Md Ethem of Khomidok Umang Leikai; Md Ethem, 46, so of  (L) Md Angou of Khomidok Umang Leikai; Md Amirkhan , 36, son of Md Ito of Khomidok Epum Mapal;  Md Habibur , 40 son of (L) Md Latif of Khomidok Sorok Mapal;

Md Mustakim, 27, son of (L) Md Nasir Ali of Heingang Khong;  Md Mujibur, 35 son of (L) Md Rafijuddin of Ipum Mapal; Md Raeiz Khan , 24, son of Md Ethem of Khomidok Umang Leikai; Ruhima, 25, wife of Md Achouba of Kairang Umang Leikai; Sahista , 20 wife of Md Sarukhan of Khabeisoi Mayai Leikai; Thoibi, 49, wife of Md Rahaman of Heikru Makhong and Samin, 19, daughter of Md Maniruddin of Heikru Makhong.
