The All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU) on Tuesday appealed to the state government to take up necessary arrangements to increase the intake capacity of government institutions so that the students may continue their further studies in the future.
The student’s body submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren for his immediate intervention into the admission process of the government schools and colleges and to take up necessary measures.
The memorandum reminded that the pass percentages of the Board and Council examinations are absolute 100 per cent and 99.6 per cent respectively as declared by the Education department.
On the contrary, with the limited intake capacity of government higher secondary schools and colleges, it will not be possible to accommodate all those students who cannot afford to get admission in costlier private schools and colleges, AMSU stated.
Asserting that the number of students seeking admission in class XI will highly increase in government higher secondary schools, especially those located in Imphal area, it stated that in this situation the limited seats of the secondary schools will cause a high dropout rate of the students who simply could not get admission.
It will be the same case for the numerous students who have passed XII standard and seeking admission in colleges and as a result, it will tremendously hamper the society and affect the academic career of the students, the memorandum added.
It also pointed out that the second wave of COVID-19 has hit the daily wagers and low income families hard and the children of those families have no options available other than to enrol at government institutes.
“Unfortunately, the government has not taken any steps to straighten out the upcoming problematic situation which will occur during the admission process,” it mentioned.
Stating that there is still time for the government to take necessary steps to increase the intake capacities and facilitate the acquired materials of higher secondary schools, colleges and universities to accommodate more students, the memorandum further appealed to chalk out a policy, to form a committee under the guidance of Education minister and to take up necessary action at the earliest.
