Man jumps into Imphal River, combined team carries out search

According to police sources, the man who jumped into the river has been identified as one Md Fariz Khan.

One man jumped into the Imphal River when a police patrolling car approached KR Lane, Imphal East district to caution the people in the area to remain inside their houses on Sunday.

According to police sources, the man, who jumped into the river, has been identified as one Md Fariz Khan, 26, son of Md Islammudin of Sangaiyumpham, presently staying in a rented house at KR Lane, Imphal East.

One police personnel of Imphal East district police reported that Fariz was playing football at KR Lane ground, Imphal East. When the police patrolling car approached the area to caution the people to remain inside their houses as curfew was imposed, Fariz jumped into the river.

To avoid the spread of COVID-19 and as precautionary measures, the state government has imposed the curfew in the state, he added.

A report was received at around 6 pm at Porompat Police Station stating about a person jumping into the Imphal River. Immediately, a combined team of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), State Fire Service and Imphal East district police reached the jumping spot and started searching for Fariz, said the police personnel.

Due to the rainfall, the combined team was facing problems in the search, he added. The team is still searching for Fariz in the river and nearby areas till the time of filing this report.
