Two candidates from Ukhrul district of Manipur have made it to the list of successful candidates of the Combined-Geo Scientist Exams 2020 conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

Alumni of IIT Dhanbad - Nganaomi Khangrah who hail from Sihai Khullen in the North of Ukhrul secured 67th rank, and Mirinsing Angkang of Sinakeithel village from Ukhrul west stood 68th.

The final result was declared by the UPSC based on the results of the preliminary examination held on January 19, 2020. The main examination (Written) was conducted on October 17 and 18, 2020 and the interviews for personality tests were held in April and July this year.

Speaking to the Imphal Free Press over the phone, Mirinsing Angkang who cracked the geo-scientist examination in his first attempt expressed his thankfulness to his father for his unceasing support and prayers. Despite losing his wife when his two sons were at their tender age, ensured that their education was not hindered by the loss, he said.

“My father is the backbone of my success. My family and friends have always supported me financially, morally and spiritually,” he said, and thanked them for believing in him.

Mirinsing did his schooling from Chingshang private school, Sinakeithel and finished 12 class from Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School, Hungpung Ukhrul.

When asked how it feels to be selected, a visibly beaming Angkang, who was ranked 4th in B.SC graduation from DM College Imphal, said, “I am happy and relieved. It was a huge relief as the exam has been postponed for months because of Covid pandemic".

He said it was not as tough as he had expected it to be. The new syllabus introduced in prelims put more pressure on my preparations as I had to go through the general studies as well as main subject geology.”

Angkang further urged the future aspirants to put God first and quoted the saying, “When you desperately want something, the universe conspires to make it happen.”

Nganaomi Khangrah, who is also a passionate footballer, left no stone unturned as he shared his journey thus far with the IFP. He said he was born and raised in a big family with seven siblings where the plight of his income-starved parents was written all over their faces.

“Given the hardships shouldered by my poor parents, I moved to my uncle, Shangreiyo Khangrahs’ place. My aunt and uncle provide me with the best of everything. I owe them so much. The hard earned education which I received today is because of them,” said a visibly emotional yet cheerful 24-year-old Nganaomi, son of Tuisem Khangrah as he revisited his family’s background.

“I would like to give my heartfelt thanks to my parents, my aunt and uncle’s family for all that they have done for me. What I am today is because of them,” he added, while appealing to the youths to have dreams and work towards achieving them through hard work and commitment.

When the Imphal Free Press interacted with Mirinsing’s father Ramyo Angkang, he was on top of the world.

"I did not marry again after my wife passed away because I do not want to jeopardise my two son's future. As for me, my children come first and not the other way round,” he said.  Today, I am a happy man, a proud father, Mirinsing father said as he celebrated the achievement of his son.

The newly selected Geo-Scientist duo is likely to join the services in the month of November.
