A joint team of forest officials from Pallel, Waikhong and Kakching range seized several bird nests and traps from the wetlands located in Kakching district during a drive conducted on the occasion of World Nature Conservation Day on Wednesday.

Range forest officer Kakching Naorem Munal Meitei who also participated in the drive said that the team of officials were able to seize eight bird nets and 46 traps but the miscreants fled away in a boat after taking advantage of the heavy rains and bad road conditions.

July 28 is observed as World Nature Conservation Day all across the World to increase awareness about the need for protecting Nature and natural resources, he said, lamenting the finding of the bird nets and traps on the occasion.

He further said that compared to other states, Manipur is lagging behind in regard to the field of protecting nature and natural resources including wildlife. The recent natural disasters happening all across the planet such as the heavy floods in China and drought in parts of the US is a warning from Mother Nature, he added.

“Doomsday will arrive soon if timely actions are not taken up, so let us all join hands in protecting the environment for the sake of future generations and mother Earth,” he appealed.
