Tokyo Olympics 2020: PM Narendra Modi congratulates Mirabai Chanu for winning Silver in weightlifting

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday congratulated Mirabai Chanu for winning India's first medal - a silver medal in weightlifting - at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

In a tweet, the prime minister said, "Could not have asked for a happier start to @Tokyo2020! India is elated by @mirabai_chanu’s stupendous performance. Congratulations to her for winning the Silver medal in weightlifting. Her success motivates every Indian. #Cheer4India #Tokyo2020".

Manipur's weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu fetched India's first medal in Tokyo Olympic Games 2020, winning the silver medal in Women's 49 kg category.

Mirabai Chanu lifted 87 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean & jerk to give a total of 202 kilogram for the silver medal. China weightlifter lifter Hou Zhihui grabbed the gold and Indonesian weightlifter lifter Windy Cantina Aisah fetch the bronze medal.

Congratulating Mirabai Chanu, Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur said in a Twitter post: “A big thank you and thank you on behalf of PM Modi and the entire country for bringing a big smile on the faces of 135 crore Indians. First day, first medal; you made the country proud."

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and other leaders of the state also took to Twitter to express their happiness and congratulated Mirabai Chanu

N Biren tweeted, “What a day! What a win for India. Mirabai Chanu wins silver in Weightlifting Women’s 49kg category, India opens tally in Tokyo Olympics. You have made the country proud today. Bravo”.

Works Minister Th Biswajit extended congratulations to Mirabai Chanu with his tweet, “heartiest congratulations to @mirabai_chanu on winning the Silver medal in Weightlifting for India at the #TokyoOlympics2020. Proud of you.”

MLA of Heirok assembly constituency Th Radheshyam who also is the president of Manipur Olympics Association (MOA) stated in a video message that “today is a great day for we all Indians, as one of the athletes who is a part of the Indian contingent for Tokyo Olympics has won the first medal in the 49 kg weight lifting category. Mirabai Chanu who belongs to Manipur has won the first medal, i.e. the silver medal. We are very proud and congratulate Mirabai Chanu, and express our wish and hope that more and more medals will be won by the Indian contingent. We once more wish them the best!”
